Counselor's Page
Welcome to Mrs. Wilson’s school counseling webpage! This is my first year as counselor here at Garland, and I am excited to meet all of you. I have a Master of Education in the field of school counseling. This means I am a trained and caring professional who works with all students, parents, teachers, staff, and the community to help our students here at Garland achieve academic and social success. This webpage provides you with information about the school counseling program and resources.

School Counseling Program

I have the joy of working with students through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. I also collaborate with school staff and parents in order to best meet the needs of students.

Attendance

Studies show that attendance is a crucial factor in determining academic success of students. Coming to school everyday is something we want all students to strive for. As school counselor I am working to make school a priority. I am doing this with a targeted group of students and school wide. Each month we have a goal for attendance and rewards and recognition for all the hard work and effort of our 'Attendance Stars.' I want Garland to be a place kids are excited to come to so that learning can happen.

Classroom Guidance Lessons
I visit each classroom multiple times throughout the school year and have the chance to interact with every student during these lessons. Lessons typically last 30 minutes in length and cover topics such as school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, friendship skills, and study skills.

This year we will be working on 8 character traits during our character ed class. These traits are optimism, kindness, humility, forgiveness, compassion, empathy, patience, and gratitude. We will also be working with students on bully prevention during the first week of school and throughout the character trait lessons.

Small Group Counseling
A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations. Groups can have anywhere from 3-12 members and usually meet once a week during lunch for several weeks.

Individual Counseling
Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges.
